ixia - Public Art Professional Development Seminar 2: Public Art Evaluation Toolkit
This event is now fully booked. Apologies for any inconvenience.
Places Matter! has partnered with ixia, the public art think tank, to deliver a series of public art seminars in the Northwest.
The seminars will enable attendees to reflect upon contemporary public art practice and to develop their understanding of specific contexts and issues which support and influence the delivery of public art. The seminars have been devised for artists, curators, public art consultants and representatives of public and private sector organisations that promote and commission public art. In addition to hearing from speakers, attendees will be encouraged to engage actively in discussions and to reflect upon their own work in relation to the issues discussed.
For more information about the series of seminars, click here...
Cost: The cost for each seminar is £60.00 + VAT including lunch and refreshments. You will be invoiced upon making a provisional booking for the event. Your place will be confirmed when payment has been received.
The seminars are supported by Arts Council England: www.artscouncil.org.uk
Seminar 2: Public Art Evaluation Toolkit
Seminar Location: Number One Hotel, Blackpool, Lancashire
Date: Thursday 12 November 2009, 10am - 4pm (registration 9.30am)
In response to the Government’s approach to evidence based policy making, ixia and OPENspace (the research centre supported by Edinburgh College of Art and Heriot-Watt University) have created an Evaluation Toolkit for public art. The Toolkit assists users to:
• carry out an appraisal of the feasibility of a public art commission;
• maximise the potential of a public art commission and identify different goals;
• identify and agree the outcome measures that are appropriate to assess impact;
• agree systems for collecting, storing, analysing and reporting on data gathered.
Two tools have been developed: the Matrix and Personal Project Analysis (PPA). Both are designed to be used at several stages in a project: at initiation, to identify objectives and approaches; during the life of the project, to evaluate process and outcome; and after completion of the project, to assess impact. In addition, ixia has developed an on-line database to hold information about the public art commissions evaluated using the Toolkit. At present, ixia is using the Evaluation Toolkit to evaluate the Big Art Project, which includes two public art commissions in the northwest of England at St Helens and Burnley.
The seminar will be led by Rod Varley and Cathy Newbery, two of ixia’s Associate Consultants. The seminar will enable attendees to think creatively about evaluation and use the Toolkit and database.
