The 2011 civic Trust Awards Application Round is now open
All entries should be made online via www.civictrustawards.org.uk. The website caries full instructions for entrants and allows the submission of photographs and supporting documents, which can be simply and easily uploaded.
The 2010 Civic Trust Awards received 23 entries from the North West and was the most successful region in the UK, with 4 Special Awards, 5 schemes winning Awards and 1 Commendation. These included the Liverpool One development, ‘Dream’ – the sculpture in St Helens and the restoration of the Midland Hotel in Morecambe.
Applications are invited from Architects and Developers; however, members of the public are also able to nominate successful local schemes for entry to the Awards. Whether it is a building, public space or public art project, please email info@civictrustawards.org.uk and we will contact the designer to encourage them to make an entry. We would encourage applications from completed schemes that have particularly improved the quality of life for the local community.
Civic Trust Awards Managing Director, Malcolm Hankey said “The 2010 Civic Trust Awards attracted over 330 entries and winning projects demonstrating excellence in design whilst offering a cultural, social or economic benefit to the local community. We were delighted to see such a diverse range of projects submitted for consideration from all over the UK, Europe and it is our hope to expand the Awards internationally this year having already received expressions of interest from Argentina, Seattle, New York, Canada, Germany, Austria, France, Sweden and Belgium ”
The Civic Trust Awards team are also interested in attracting local people to act as Community Advisors on our volunteer assessment teams. Their role is to represent the views of the people who use or see the project as part of their environment.

2010 North West Winning Projects
Dream designed by Jaume Plensa receiving a Civic Trust Award and Special Award for Community Engagement. Comments received from the judging panel were “This iconic landmark structure of a young girls head standing 20meteres high on the site of the former Sutton Manor Colliery in St Helens was made possible by an extensive community engagement programme and commissioned by ex-miners and St Helens Council.”
Liverpool One Masterplan submitted by BDP (Masterplanners) received a Civic Trust Award and Special Award for Sustainability. Comments received from the judging panel were “An excellent example of how public realm and civic space can join a city, demonstrating high quality design thought and execution making a positive, highly sustainable, usable and inclusive destination.”
Midland Hotel, Morecambe designed by Union North won a Civic Trust Award and Special Award for Restoration. Comments received from the judging panel were “The restoration and refurbishment has been handled sensitively and with care underscoring the hotels heritage, preserving original features whilst allowing a previously inaccessible building to become inclusive for all.”
Paradise Street Pedestrian Bridge, Liverpool designed by Wilkinson Eyre Architects picked up a Civic Trust Award and National Panel Special Award chosen as the favourite winning scheme from 325 applications received. Comments received from the judging panel were “An exemplar contemporary bridge design viewed as an elegant, exciting element of engineered artwork with an extraordinary high level of originality equally accessible to all users.”
And the redevelopment and restoration of Blencow Hall, Penrith by Graham K Norman (Architect) Ltd with Donald Insall Associates took home a Civic Trust Award. Comments received from the judging panel were “The redevelopment maintains the integrity and impact of the historic hall whilst providing an intelligent and ingenious solution.”
A Civic Trust Award Commendation went to Pendleton Gateway Centre, Salford designed by Austin-Smith:Lord and was described as “A highly utilised community resource offering a broad range of health services, community facilities and library, ideally located with excellent inclusive design credentials.”
