Places Matter! publishes Annual Review 2008/09

The role of Places Matter! is to promote excellence in the built environment in the Northwest. Our Annual Review 2008/09 looks back at the activities to date of key strands of the programme including Design Review, Education, Skills and Research, and looks forward to future plans. Interested? Northwest Design Review Panel announces affiliation with CABE

The Places Matter! Northwest Design Review Panel has joined with seven other regional design review services to affiliate with the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE). This will create a national network of design review panels, providing all local planning authorities with access to independent practical design advice. The network (including CABE) will collectively review more than 800 schemes a year. Interested? Find out more

Places Matter! Education

The Places Matter! Education programme is now in full swing and has delivered a number of successful projects to date with exciting plans for the future. Places Matter Education is a regional programme of activity that seeks to engage young people aged 14 - 19 from across the Northwest in architecture and the built environment. Current activities include a CPD programme for teachers, a student conference planned for Spring 2010 and the Northwest Architecture for Everyone campaign in partnership with the Stephen Lawrence Trust and Urbis. Manual for Streets Northwest workshops

Places Matter! is holding workshops across the Northwest in Manchester, Blackburn, Liverpool, Blackpool and Whitehaven during winter 2009/10 to give an overview of the Manual for Streets document and outline the principles of successful street design. Each workshop will focus on a local and relevant case study and site visit, providing hands-on guidance and expertise. Interested? Find out more

ixia Public Art Professional Development Seminars

Places Matter! has partnered with ixia, the public art think tank, to deliver a series of public art seminars in the Northwest. The seminars will enable attendees to reflect upon contemporary public art practice and to develop their understanding of specific contexts and issues which support and influence the delivery of public art. The seminars have been devised for artists, curators, public art consultants and representatives of public and private sector organisations that promote and commission public art. Interested? North West Pan-professional CPD Programme

Delivering sustainable development is a fundamental task for planners, architects and associated professions who are involved in place making and management. The challenge is to deliver sustainable development in all its dimensions - economic, social and environment - and in all situations - regeneration, renewal and growth areas. This event brings together a number of the key themes and aspects of sustainable development and sustainable communities theory and practice. It provides the context for policy and practice, presents the major challenges, and offers in depth insights into a selection of applications. Interested? Find out more
