What is Design Review?

A high quality built environment is crucial to the region's economic prosperity and quality of life.

Design Review is a respected method of improving the quality of new built environment development proposals by offering constructive, impartial and expert advice to developers, planning authorities and regional agencies on development schemes.

Design Review is entered into by agreement at an early stage in the development process. It aims to be constructive in its recommendations; therefore we suggest that projects come to us at the pre-planning stage when there is scope for discussion and possible change.

The reviews take place at a monthly meeting of the Northwest Design Review Panel, consisting of experts from a range of fields, including architecture, planning, development, urban design, civil and structural engineering, the historic environment, landscape design, sustainability and environmental services, highways and transport, community engagement and public art.

The panel's views are summarised in written reports for use by planning authorities and scheme proponents to help them evaluate and improve scheme designs.

The Design Review Panel is intended to help raise design aspirations and encourage adoption of consistently high design standards across the Northwest. The panel will consider schemes of more than local significance.

We would like to encourage you to take part in the process by either bringing forward schemes which may benefit from Design Review or attending as observer at one of our sessions, to experience the process for yourself and consider whether the service may become a useful tool as part of a wider consultation process for projects in your area.
